Oppenheimer’s Cillian Murphy the first Irish-born star to win the Best Actor Oscar in Los Angeles.
Poor Things, which was produced in Dublin by Element Pictures, won four Oscars, including Best Actress for Emma Stone.
Murphy received a standing ovation when he earned his Oscar, but Oppenheimer emerged victorious with seven Academy Awards at the ceremony.
The Cork guy stated, “I’m a little bit overwhelmed,” while on stage at the Dolby Theatre.
“Every single crew member, every single cast member you carried me through,” he said in his thank you to Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan. He also praised his fellow candidates, saying, “I’m in awe of you guys.”
Next, Murphy expressed his gratitude to his parents, Brendan and Mary, as well as to “my two boys, Malachy and Aran, who are sitting up there I love you so much” and “Yvonne McGuinness, my partner in life and art.”
“I’m a very proud Irishman standing here tonight,” Murphy added.
“For better or ill, we’re all living in Oppenheimer’s world,” he said, wrapping up his speech. “We made a film about the man who created the atomic bomb, so I would really like to dedicate this to the peacemakers everywhere.”
